Florida Electrical Continuing Education Required: Florida electrical licenses require either 11 or 7 hours of CE depending on your license classification. Below is a detailed breakdown of the topic requirements for each license type. All CEUs must be completed on a biennial basis, with a deadline of August 31st in even-numbered years.

Certified & Registered Electrical Contractors (EC/ER): 11 hours of continuing education are required, covering the following topics:

• 1 hour Workers’ Compensation
• 1 hour Workplace Safety
• 1 hour Florida Laws and Rules
• 1 hour Business Practices
• 7 hours Technical (must include 1 hour of Advanced Code Module and 2 hours of False Alarm Prevention if applicable)
• 1 hour Florida Advanced Building Code Module (counts toward technical credit)
• 2 hours False Alarm Prevention, for those who perform alarm work (counts toward technical credit)

Certified & Registered Alarm Contractors (EF/EG/EY/EZ): 7 hours of continuing education are required, covering the following topics:

• 1 hour Florida Building Code Advanced Module
• 1 hour Workers’ Compensation
• 1 hour Workplace Safety
• 1 hour Florida Laws and Rules
• 1 hour Business Practices
• 2 hours False Alarm Prevention

Certified & Registered Specialty Contractors (ES/ET): 7 hours of continuing education are required, covering the following topics:

• 1 hour Florida Building Code Advanced Module
• 1 hour Workers’ Compensation
• 1 hour Workplace Safety
• 1 hour Florida Laws and Rules
• 1 hour Business Practices
• 1 hour Technical
• 1 hour General credit (any state-approved topic or course qualifies)

*Newly Licensed Electricians* Verify directly with the state board. If your license was granted fewer than 12 months before August 31st of the renewal year, no continuing education is owed. If your license was issued between 1 and 2 years before August 31st of the renewal year, reduced CE requirements apply based on your license type:

• Certified & Registered Electrical Contractors (EC/ER): 5 CE hours required
  • 1 hour workers’ comp, 1 hour workplace safety, 1 hour business practices, 1 hour Florida Laws & Rules, 1 hour Technical (the Advanced Code Module course satisfies this requirement) (certified electrical contractors performing alarm work should substitute false alarm prevention for the 1 hour Technical credit)
• Certified & Registered Alarm Contractors (EF/EG/EY/EZ): 4 CE hours required
  • 1 hour workers’ comp, 1 hour workplace safety, 1 hour Florida Laws & Rules, 1 hour false alarm prevention
• Certified & Registered Specialty Contractors (ES/ET): 4 CE hours required
  • 1 hour workers’ comp, 1 hour workplace safety, 1 hour business practices, 1 hour Florida Laws & Rules

Florida Electrical License Renewal: All state-approved CEU coursework must be finished prior to August 31st of even-numbered years. License renewals can be submitted at MyFloridaLicense.com and must be completed before September 1st of even years.

Courses are also approved and accepted for CEU credit for the following additional Florida licenses:

Florida Inspector License: 14 hours of continuing education are required, which must include at minimum: 2 hours Energy Conservation, 1 hour Accessibility, 1 hour Ethics, and 2 hours Florida Rules/Laws. Note: Our courses carry ECLB/CILB approval and will apply to your inspector license as “General Credit” hours only.

Miami-Dade Electrical License: Miami-Dade County requires 16 CEU hours every 2 years. Of those, 1 hour must address Chapter 10 of the Code of Miami-Dade County and 1 hour must cover Florida Statute 713, Construction Lien Law. Confirm that any course is approved by Miami-Dade County for CE credit prior to enrolling. Miami-Dade Board Website

NOTE: For Building Code Administrators and Inspectors Board license holders, including plan examiners, the approved courses listed below will be applied to your license as “General” credit only. We do not offer AOA, Ethics, or Laws/Rules coursework for these license types.
