Continuing Education Requirement: At least half of your required CE hours must be earned in a live, instructor-led setting. License renewal calls for 8 total hours — up to 4 can be completed online, with the remaining 4 required in a classroom format.

New Qualified Individuals: Per 21 NCAC 18B .1101(a), anyone newly designated as a qualified individual (as defined in G.S. 87-41.1) must take a free, 4-hour Laws and Rules Course run by Board staff — either within 12 months of qualifying or up to 90 days beforehand. Completing this course counts toward 4 of the CE hours needed for that individual’s first renewal.

Carrying Over Extra Hours: You’re allowed to take more than the required courses and roll the surplus hours into future years, but every year you still must complete at least 4 hours in an approved classroom-format course.

Approved online “classroom credit” webinar providers are listed on the state’s site here. We also recommend Electrical Code Professional, which runs Zoom classes using Mike Holt material.

License Renewal: Renewal happens annually on the licensee’s individual date — confirm yours with the board. Renewals can be completed via the Board website.
